offered throughout the school year for the local public and private schools. The
presentations focus on various fire and injury prevention topics. If you would
like to learn more about the classroom presentations offered by Pierce County

Fire safety is covered in a lesson which introduces the concepts of:
- escaping from fire environments
- knowing the sound of a smoke detector
- calling 911
- match and lighter safety
- stop, drop, and roll
Fire safety is taught using the Be Cool About Fire Safety video. The
lesson includes:
- don't play with matches and lighters
- smoke detectors
- don't hide go out side
- escape planning
- calling 911
Water safety is the focus using the American Red Cross "Longfellow's
Whales Tales". The lesson includes:
- swim with a buddy
- be cool, follow the rule
- look before you leap
- reach or throw, don't go
- don't just pack it, wear your jacket
- calling 911
Disaster preparedness that includes information such as:
- What is a disaster?
- How to assemble a disaster preparedness kit.
- What to do before, during and after an earthquake.
Gearing up for safe bicycle riding, skateboarding, in-line skating, boating
etc. are taught through an interactive video called Safety Central. Safety
Central is offered through Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and the program will allow
all 4th grade students to receive a free bicycle helmet. The less
includes:
- to stay safe during outdoor activities
- to think about and plan ahead for every activity
- how to keep yourself safe by making the right choices
Introduction to first aid and CPR is taught and includes lessons on:
- accessing 9-1-1
- how to treat for shock
- choking and rescue breathing
- burns
- bleeding

A bimonthly newsletter distributed to elementary school students at the
request of the classroom teacher is provided in conjunction with the fire
department classroom presentations. The Fireflies Newsletter addresses
fire/burn and injury prevention topics in an age appropriate, interactive
