Fire Inspections

The fire inspection program has two main objectives.  The first is to reduce the severity and impact of a fire or an emergency incident. This is accomplished by an on-site visit from a fire inspector. The inspector checks to ensure that the occupants and general public are safe through the enforcement of the 2006 International Fire Code, adopted by the City of University Place and University Place Fire Department. If any discrepancies are found, they will be discussed with the responsible party, a plan for correction issued, and a follow-up inspection may be scheduled.

The second objective is the inspector becoming more familiar with an establishment. Commercial buildings and any hazardous or life threatening operations will be noted in the department's pre-fire planning. The pre-fire plan allows firefighters quick access to vital information and a measured drawing of the building, should there be a fire or medical emergency.

Fire Permits

The International Fire Code contains a list of activities, operations, practices or functions for which permits are required. The intent of the permit system is to insure that potentially hazardous uses or processes are conducted in accordance with accepted safety standards and guidelines.

Please review the list of activities which require a permit. If you will be conducting any of these activities, contact Rod Pearce, Fire Prevention Officer, at 253-564-1236 so arrangements for an inspection and the issuing of the permit(s) can be made.
